Start with two facts: your hardness and your water source
- Hardness in grains per gallon (gpg). Find it in your utility's water quality report, or compare with Texas hardness by city.
- City water or a private well. SoftPro sells separate city and well versions. City water is usually disinfected with chlorine or chloramine. Wells don't get a CCR and may carry iron, sulfur or sediment, so test first.
Quick match by Texas situation
| Your situation | Example areas (published hardness) | SoftPro products to look at |
|---|---|---|
| City water, moderately hard (under ~7 gpg) | Austin (≈5.4 gpg avg), much of Fort Worth (≈5–8) | A softener is optional here. If scale is your main complaint and you don't want salt, look at the SoftPro FORTRESS Salt-Free Conditioner or SoftPro Elite Salt Free Conditioner. If you want truly soft water, a small SoftPro ECO City Water Softener works. |
| City water, hard to very hard (7–15 gpg) | Frisco/NTMWD (≈6–12), El Paso (≈10) | SoftPro ECO City Water Softener or SoftPro Elite Smart HE (city water), sized with the worksheet below. |
| City water, very hard (15+ gpg) | San Antonio/SAWS (15–20), Round Rock (≈15) | Salt-based softener: SoftPro ECO City Water Softener or SoftPro Elite Smart HE (city water), larger capacities for bigger households. Salt-free conditioners don't remove hardness, so they're a weaker fit here. |
| Private well, hardness only | Hill Country and rural wells (test needed) | SoftPro ECO Well Water Softener or SoftPro Elite Smart HE for Well Water, "softener only" option. |
| Private well with iron, sulfur (rotten-egg) smell or manganese | Varies by aquifer; test needed | A softener paired with the SoftPro AIO Iron Master. Start with the SoftPro Well Water Test Kit or a lab test. |
Salt-based softeners vs salt-free conditioners
A salt-based (ion-exchange) softener removes calcium and magnesium, so the water tests soft. A salt-free conditioner is meant to reduce scale buildup without removing the minerals, so your water will still test hard. SoftPro lists both of its salt-free models as city water products. In very hard Texas water (San Antonio, Round Rock), a salt-based softener is the more direct fix. Check whether your HOA or city limits softener discharge before installing one.

- Fits: wells with rust staining or a rotten-egg smell. It goes before a softener. Confirm your well pump's flow rate first.
SoftPro Well Water Test Kit
- Basic kit $159, Ultimate kit $269. An independent lab test is an alternative.
Whole-home filtration for city water
SoftPro Chlorine+ Carbon Whole House Filter
- 1.5 cu ft, listed for 1–6 bathrooms, $1,097.
- SoftPro lists it for chlorine, chloramine, PFAS and pesticides. Many Texas utilities disinfect with chloramine, so check your CCR. This filter doesn't soften water. It's the add-on in the ECO and Elite "Gold" bundles.
Picking a grain capacity
Use the sizing worksheet: hardness (gpg) × people × about 75 gallons/day × 7 days. Example: a family of 4 in San Antonio at 17.5 gpg needs about 36,750 grains/week. Headline capacities are measured at maximum salt, so a 48k or larger unit leaves room for efficient salt settings. A couple in Austin at 5.4 gpg needs about 5,700 grains/week, which a 32k unit covers easily. If you're on a well, add about 4 gpg for each 1 ppm of iron, and confirm with SoftPro or your installer.
What we can't tell you
- How long these units last in real Texas homes. We haven't tested them.
- Installation cost. That depends on your plumbing and on whether you DIY or hire a plumber.
- Whether softened or filtered water affects health. This page is about hardness, scale and sizing only.
